Vinoba Bhave

Vinoba Bhave was born on September 11, 1895. He was also called as Acharya and was considered as the spiritual successor of Mahatma Gandhi and the national teacher of India. He studied ancient Sanskrit texts in Varanasi. He developed a deep bond with Gandhi after he met him for the first time at Kochrab Ashram in Ahmedabad on June 7, 1916. In 1923, he started `Maharashtra Dharma', a monthly in Marathi that featured his essays on the Upanishads.
In 1940, he was chosen by Gandhi to be the first Individual Satyagrahi. He also took part in the Quit India Movement. After India attained independence, he started reform movements. He died on November 15, 1982. In 1984, he was honoured with the Bharat Ratna.
