Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves
Udayagiri & Khandagiri caves are rock cut caves, located 6 km away from the city of Bhuvneshwar, Orissa. Both these caves date back to the 2nd century BC during the reign of King Kharavela of Chedi Dynasty. The caves stand separated by a narrow road. 33 rock cut caves can be found here out of which 18 are in Udayagiri cave and 15 in Khandagiri caves. These caves were built as a residential place for the Jain and Buddhist monks.
The inscriptions found on the walls of the caves reveals that they used to serves as monasteries for Jains and the Buddhist. Most of the caves are either single storied or double storied.
