Tyeb Mehta


Tyeb Mehta is a contemporary Indian painter. He was born in the year 1925 in the state of Gujarat in India. He is a recognized film maker also. In the starting stages of his career, he served as a film editor in a cinema processing lab in Mumbai. Later on his interest in painting compelled him to join Sir JJ School of arts in Mumbai city. He studied there for five years (1947-1952) and then in the year 1954 he joined progressive artist's group.

He holds the record of highest price to an Indian painting US $ 317,500.     His famous painting Kali was sold in 2005 at US $ 230,000. Famous businessman Ranjit Malkani bought his painting Gesture for 31 million rupees. He received Padma Bhushan in 2007. His film 'Koodal' won the Filmfare Critic's Award in 1970.
