The Thar Desert is also known as the Great Indian Desert. The desert forms a significant portion of the western parts of India and is spread over four Indian states- Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana. Most of the portion of the desert is rocky. In summer the temperature goes above 45 °C and in winter it is below freezing point. Rainfall is unpredictable and unstable.
The origin of Thar Desert is still unknown; however, some geologists consider it to be around 4,000 to 10,000 years old and some believe that aridity began in this region much earlier. The effect of the population on the environment is relatively less compared to the rest of India, because of its low population density.
