The Boat Mail

The Boat Mail was the one of oldest trains in India. It was a train and a steamer ferry service between India and Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka). The Boat Mail in the 19th Centaury used to run on the route in India from Madras to Tuticorin. From Tuticorin passengers were sent to Colombo from a steamer. This early train used 21 Hours and 50 minutes to travel from Madras to Tuticorin. In the year 1898 this train got vestibuled carriages.
The train's route was changed later when Panbam Bridge was opened to traffic. On this new route the Boat Mail started traveling from Madras to Dhanushkodi.

In an accident that occurred back in year 1964 The Boat Mail was washed into the sea by huge waves and cyclone. In this accident the tracks to Dhanushkodi were also destroyed.
