The Test series win of India in England, 1971 marked India's improving stature in the world stage of cricket. This memorable triumph over the former colonial masters was a matter of pride for the entire nation. Subsequent to the first two matches, India won the third match by four wickets. England took first batting and made a decent score of 355 runs to which India replied with 284 runs with Ray Illingworth taking five Indian wickets. The evenly balanced match finally fell in India's kitty, as a result of awesome display of spin bowler Bhagwat Chandrashekhar.
