| In India, telecommunication services were introduced right after the invention of telegraphy and telephone. In 1851, the first Telegraph line between Kolkata and Diamond Harbour was opened. Since independence, the Indian Telecommunication services have improved significantly. With the opening of Telecom sector and various private investment and establishment, various service providers have been achieved.
On 1 October 2000, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a Public Sector Undertaking, was formed to take over all the service providing functions of the former Department of Telecommunication Services (DTS). By the end of 2004-05, India became the 10th largest telecom network in the world in terms of number of phones.
