After the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991, Tajikistan became independent. Relations of the country with India have been good since then. This was mainly due to the support of India in removing the terrorist activities of the Taliban from Afganistan and neighbouring Tajikistan. This nation holds a very strategic position in the Central Asia and has a rivalry with both China and Pakistan.
Even though the trade has been low between the two countries, India has still managed to have a military base in Central Asia. It is only the fourth country to do so, with the first three being US, Russia and Germany. This air base was made by renovating the Farkhor Air Base which was completed in 2006. The base now has 12 MiG, 29 bombers and trainer aircrafts in the Farkhor Air Base in Tajikistan. |
