Sun Temple - Modhera
The Sun Temple at Modhera was built during the reign of King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty in 1026 A.D. The temple is dedicated to the Sun God. At present, the ambiance of the temple provides a marvellous backdrop for several dance, cultural festivals and exhibition of performing arts. The temple appears magnificent even in its ruin state with the pillared portico reflected in the massive tank.
There is no worship offered now in this temple. The temple has a sanctum where carved images of the Sun God wearing a belt and long shoes are portrayed. The temple was designed in such a way that the rays of the sun illuminate the sanctum at dawn.
