The Indian soils is classified into 8 categories- alluvial soil, red soil, black soil, laterite soil, forest soil, arid and desert soil, peaty and organic soil and saline and alkaline soil. 80% of the total land surface of India constitute of alluvial soil, red soil, black soil and laterite soil.
Alluvial soils are found in the Great Northern plains. Black soils are developed in the Deccan lava region. Red soils are found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka plateau, and Andhra plateau. Laterite soils are found in tropical regions with heavy rainfall. Forest soils occur on the slopes of hills and mountains in Himalayas, Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats.
