Smita Patil
Smita Patil was a leading actress of Indian cinema from the 1970s to the 1980s and acted in both Hindi and Marathi cinemas. She was born on 17th October 1955. She was also a member of the Women’s Centre in Mumbai and an active feminist. Before becoming an actress she was a TV news reader and a photographer.
In 1977, Smita won the National Award for 'Best Actress' for her performance in the Hindi film Bhumika. She has also won the Filmfare Best Actress Award twice for Marathi films Zait Re Zait and Umbartha. She was a women's rights activist and became famous for her roles in films that portrayed women as capable and empowered. She died on December 13, 1986, as a result of childbirth complications.
