Shyam Benegal


Shyam Benegal was born on 14 December, 1934, in Andhra Pradesh. He is an Indian director and screenwriter. In 1959, he started his career as an advertising copywriter in a Mumbai based company. Later, he became the creative head of the company. In the mean time, he made his first documentary film in Gujarati in 1962. After a decade he directed his first feature film ‘Ankur’.
In 1976, Benagal was awarded the Padma Shri and in 1991, he received the Padma Bhushan. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2005, on 8th August 2007. He has won the National Film Award seven times for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
