Shahu Chhatrapati

Shahu Chhatrapati was also known as Rajarshi Shahu. He was born on 26 July 1874 and was the Maharaja between 1884 and 1922 of the princely state of Kolhapur in India. He was the eldest son of Shrimant Jaysingrao. In 1883, after the death of the Maharaja Shivaji IV of Kolhapur, his widow adopted Shahu. He became the ruler of Kolhapur at the age of 20.
Shahu later forwarded the social revolutions set off by Mahatma Jyotiba Phule in Maharashtra for human rights and social equality. He took many steps to develop the under-privileged and provide education and employment for the backward class. He tried to break the caste system, restrict child marriage and encouraged widow remarriage. He died in Bombay on May 6, 1922, at the early age of 48.
