Shah Jahan

Shah Jahan was the fifth Mughal Emperor and was the son of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. He was born on 5 January, 1592. In 1627, he succeeded to the throne upon his father’s death. Taj Mahal, one of the most beautiful monuments of the world is a significant part of Shah Jahan life history. He built this monument in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The period of Shah Jahan reign is known as the Golden Age of Mughal architecture. He erected number of splendid monuments and mosques. He was also the founder of Shahjahanabad, presently known as Old Delhi. He felt ill in 1658 and was confined by his son Aurangzeb in the citadel of Agra until his death in 1666.
