|Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was the most popular Bengali novelist in the early 20th century. He was born on September 15, 1876 in Debanadapur, Hooghly, India. He was born in to poverty and his family was occasionally bore by additional family members. Sarat Chandra’s financial instability greatly influenced his writings in the upcoming years. He started as a student of fine arts, but has to leave his studies because of continuing state of poverty. He completed his early education staying at his paternal uncle’s house. His works depicted rural Bengali society and questioned social superstition and oppression. Mandir, was his first published story. Some of the great movies like Devdas and Parineeta have resulted from his work.
