Ranjitsinghji



Ranjitsinghji was born in a wealthy Indian family of princely status in Sarodar a small village in Kathiawar. He enrolled at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1888 and gain cricket “blue” in the final year. Just after graduation, he started to play country cricket for Sussex and played against England in 1896. He was the first Indian player to play Test cricket. In the Test debut against Australia, he scored 989 runs, and was declared the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1897. He added unexplored dimensions to the art of batting. The Ranji Trophy, India’s premier cricket tournament was named in his honour only.
