| Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to visit space. He was born in Patiala Punjab and joined the Indian Air Force. He started the historic mission on 1984 along with the Indian Air Force. It was a part of a joint space program between the Soviet Intercosmos and Indian Space Research Organization space program. Sharma photographed northern India in anticipation of the construction of hydroelectric power station. He was bestowed with the honour of Hero of Soviet Union and later on with the highest gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra by the Government of India. Presently, he is the Chairman of the Board for Automated Workflow. |
