Pullela Gopichand



Pullela Gopichand, born on November 16, 1973, is an Indian badminton player. He made his mark at the national level in 1989. To gain international exposure, he sifted his base to Europe and played in the Germany league for a couple of seasons. Due to his performance, India reached the final of the Thomas Cup after a gap of 12 years in 2000.
In 2001, Gopichand won the All England Open Badminton Championships and became the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone. He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2000-2001. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2005. At present he runs the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy.
