Premchand, whose original name was Dhanpat Rai, was one of the notable literary figures of modern Urdu and Hindi literature. He was born on 31 November, 1880 in a village near Varanasi. He lost both his parents at an early age. In 1898, with great efforts, he passed his matriculation and in 1899 he took up teaching job. Later he worked as the deputy sub-inspector of schools.

Initially, Premchand wrote in Urdu under the name of Nawabrai. Later, he started writing under the pseudonym Premchand. He brought realism to Hindi literature and wrote over 300 stories, a dozen novels and two plays. In 1921, he was called by Gandhi and started working as the proprietor of a printing press, editor of literary and political journals. On 8th October 1936, he passed away.
