Pohay



Pohay is the Maharashtrian variant of fast food. It is served as a quick snack at tea time. Pohay are comprised of flattened, processed rice, roasted with chilies, onions, mustard and cumin seeds and curry leaves. It is a high carbohydrate, low fat quick meal that can be made in minutes.

The ingredients that are required to prepare this snack are, 2 cups Poha (Beaten Rice), 1 Potato, 1 Onion, 2 Green Chilies, 1 tsp Chana dal and Urad dal, 1/4 tsp Mustard Seeds, Curry leaves, 2 tsp Peanuts, 4 tbsp Oil, pinch of Turmeric powder, 2- 3 spoons lemon juice, Coriander and salt to taste.

To prepare this dish, first of all, soak the poha in water. Wash and drain all the water. Add some salt, turmeric powder, keep aside. Heat oil and put chana dal, urad dal, mustard seeds, peanuts, curry leaves and fry until they crackle. Add potatoes and saute for few minutes, then add chopped onions, chilies. Cook till they are done. Add the poha, coriander leaves and stir. Keep it on low flame for 5- 7 minutes. Let it cool for sometime and add then lemon juice.
