|Peter Thangaraj was one of the best Indian goal keepers. He was the guardian of the world beating Indian football team in the 1950 and 1960. His career begun as centre-forward, but his interest was drawn to goal keeping gradually. The best part was this tremendous player excelled both at domestic, as well as international level. Apart from PK Banerjee and Chuni Goswami, Thangaraj was one of the mainstays of the Indian football team, which performed well several times. At the time of the Jakarta Asian Games of the 1962, Thangaraj brought reassurance under the Indian goalbar. In 1958, he was declared to be the Best Goalkeeper of Asia and conferred with the Arjuna Award in 1967.
