Patiala State Monorail

The Patiala State Monorail was introduced in the year 1907. This unusual single track railway was constructed by Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh of Patiala to facilitate movement of people and goods in his state. The project was engineered by Col. C. W. Bowles. PSMT was the only operational railway system built on Ewing System in the world.
Initially the PSMT was organized and managed by a firm in Bombay named as Marsland and Price but later was handed over to Patiala State. The train served till 1927 and then it was closed down due to advent of better transport system and good roads. The Patiala monorail was the first commercial use of Ewing system.

With its good luck the Patiala State Monorail was repaired and restored by Mr. Mike Satow in 1962. This monorail is now preserved as the working model in the National Railway Museum of India.
