Pandit Ravi Shankar was born in Benaras on April 7, 1920. He is a Bengali Indian sitar player as well as a composer. He is a disciple of Baba Allauddin Khan, the founder of the Maihar gharana of Hindustani classical music. Presently, he is a leading Indian instrumentalist of the modern era.

Ravi has been collaborating tabla-players Pandit Chatur Lal and Ustad Allah Rakha and sarod-player Ustad Ali Akbar Khan for a long time. Besides, his collaboration with filmmaker Satyajit Ray, violinist Yehudi Menuhin, film-maker Satyajit Ray and The Beatles has added to his international reputation. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna award in 1999. |
