National Song

National Song of India is Vande Mataram. This song was composed by the famous Indian poet Bankimchandra Chatterji. This song was composed in the year 1875. Rabindernath Taagore, the writer of national anthem of India, sung this song for the first time in an assembly of congress. Rabindernath Tagore gave this song a magnificent remarkable tune. Shri Arbindo interpreted the meaning of this song. He formed an English version of this song along with its translation. Initially this song was written in Sanskrit language by Bankimchandra Chatterji but the version by Shri Arbindo was adopted as the national song. Prior to its composition “Vande Mataram”, this word was used to ignite the people towards unity to fight for their independence.

Vande Mataram!
Sujalam, suphalam, malayaja shitajam,
Shasyashyamalam, Mataram
Shubhrajyothsna puiakitayaminim,
Phullakusumita drumadala shobhinim,
Suhasinim sumadhura bhashinim,
Sukhadam varadam, Mataram!

The English translation of the stanza rendered by Sri Aurobindo in prose' is:

I bow to thee, Mother,
richly-watered, richiy-fruited,
cool with the winds of the south,
dark with the crops of the harvests,
The Mother!
Her nights rejoicing in the glory of the moonlight,
her lands clothed beautifully with her trees in flowering bloom,
Sweet of laughter, sweet of speech,
The Mother, giver of boons, giver of bliss.
