Mural Paintings

A mural is a painting done on a wall, ceiling, or other large permanent surface. The mural paintings date back to prehistoric times. Murals today are painted in a variety of ways, using oil or water based media.
There are many varieties of murals but two of the most popular ones are frescos and tempera. A fresco is a technique where the painting is done when the plaster on the wall is still wet therefore the colors intermingles permanently with the plaster and is permanent. Tempera is not permanent; it can be removed whenever required.

The earliest mural paintings appear in the form of cave or rock wall paintings in the pre- historic India, in the region of Uttar Pradesh and Central India. Some of the caves at Ajanta also illustrate the beautiful mural paintings. The Indian state Kerala has exclusive murals. These Kerala murals painting are spread on walls of Hindu temples. They can be dated from 9th century CE.
