Muntjacs are small, sturdy animals. They are russet brown in summer and grey brown in winter. Males have short antlers, which can re- grow but they tend to fight with their tusks. The adult male muntjac weighs around 10- 18 kg while the female weighs around 9- 16 kg. They have a life span of 16- 19 years.
They generally live in deciduous or coniferous forests. They are selective feeders. Their diet varies according to region and availability but may include herbs, brambles, ivy, heather, bilberry and coppice shoots. |
