Mangal Pandey

Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the 34th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) of the English East India Company was born on July 19th 1827 in the village of Nagwa, Uttar Pradesh. In the year 1849, at the age of 22 years, he joined the English East India Company's forces. Pandey is said to be instrumental in the upsurge of the sepoy mutiny over the issue of the usage of greased cartridges containing cow and pig fat, defying the religious beliefs of both Hindus and Muslims.
The death of Mangal Pandey is believed to have sparked of the ‘Revolt of 1857’, often termed as the first war of independence. Mangal Pandey’s life has been the subject for several stage plays as well as a recent Bollywood Movie starring Aamir Khan.
