Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is a tiger reserve that lies along the foothill of the Himalayas. The park is spread over 2,837 sp km of grassland and low-lying sal forest. The core area of the reserve lies in Barpeta and Kokrajhar districts. It is a home to a great variety of wild animals such as tiger, elephants, leopard, fishing cat, rhinoceros and pygmy hog.
The reserve was initially known as North Kamrup. It was designated as wildlife sanctuary in 1928 and in 1985 it was declared as World Heritage Site. It is famous for golden langur, red panda and is the only tiger reserve in Assam. The second largest population of tiger can be found here. More than 450 species of birds such as multicoloured hornbill and Bengal florican can also be sited here.
