MS Subbulakshmi
Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi or M.S.S., an acclaikemed Carnatic vocalist was born on September 16th 1916. She became the 1st musician to be honoured the Bharat Ratna. She began learning Carnatic music at an early age, and at the age of 8 years gave her 1st public recital was in the Mahamaham festival at Kumbakonam. At the age of 10 years, she released her 1st recording.
She received training in Carnatic classical music under Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and then in Hindustani classical under the guidance of Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas. She gave performances in a vast diversity of musical forms in diverse languages inclusive of Sanskrit, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, and Gujarati.

In the year 1940, M.S. wedded T.Sadasivam, and their matrimony spanned over 50 years.

She passed away on December 11th 2004.
