M G Ranade

Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade was an Indian judge, author, and reformer. He was born on 16 January 1842. He was a great scholar and founder of BORI. From 1885 until he joined the High Court, he belonged to the Bombay legislative council. He founded the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha and later was one of the originators of the Indian National Congress.
Ranade encouraged the translation of Standard English works and introduction of vernacular languages into the university curriculum. He published books on Indian economics and on Maratha history. He stated the requirement of heavy industries such as Steel as necessity for economic progress. Ranade died in 16 January, 1901.
