Legislative Assembly of India



Legislative Assembly is the lower house of state legislature in India. It is also known as Vidhan Sabha. The members of the Legislative Assembly are direct representatives of the people of the particular state as they are directly elected by an electorate consisting of all adult citizens of that state. Its maximum size as summarized in the Constitution of India is not more than 500 members and not less than 60. The tenure of the Legislative Assembly is also for 5 years.

The Legislative Assembly enjoys many powers. A motion of no confidence against the government in the state and also the money bill can only be introduced in the Legislative Assembly. The State budget is also presented here only.

The presiding officers of the Legislative assembly are Speaker and a Deputy Speaker. They are elected from among the members of the House.
