Lal Bahadur Shastri

Lal Bahadur Shastri, the third Prime Minister of Independent India was born on October 2nd 1904 in Mughal sarai, Uttar Pradesh. Lal Bahadur stayed at his maternal grandfather Hazari Lal's house after his father’s demise till he turned 10 years old. Due to the absence of a high school in their town, Lal Bahadur was sent to Varanasi wherein he and joined the Harischandra High School, and stayed with his maternal uncle. He married Lalita Devi of Mirzapur in the year 1927.
He admired nationalist leaders such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak. In the 1915, after hearing speech of Mahatma Gandhi at Varanasi, he dropped his surname ‘Srivastava’ as it was indicative of his caste. He also translated Madam Cama’s autobiography into Hindi language.
