|Lachit Borphukan, a commander in the Ahom kingdom, Assam who was renowned for his amazing leadership in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. He was the son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua, who rose from humble beginning and become the Commander-in-Chief of the Ahom army and the first Governor of upper Assam. He got his initial training in scriptures, humanities and military skills. It was the attempts of this brave commander, which thwarted Mughal forces to take back Kamrup. His valour in the decisive battle made him rise to the stature of a national hero. He died just after the victory, due to some illness.
