Kolam is a decorative design which is generally drawn on the floor in a home. Female members of a family draw this design as a traditional practice. It is a form of rangoli. Kolam is said to be drawn as a visual/painted prayer. Kolam is generally practiced in south India. It is a line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots. Kolams are not only made for decoration purposes but they are painted to provide meals to the ants since they are painted with rice powder and paste. It is believed that ants don’t have to work hard for a meal.

Kolam is sometimes a group activity which is celebrated like a festival. Women and girls make a very big Kolam covering entire width of a road.
