|Kalpana Chawla was a renowned scientist and Indian- American astronaut, born in Karnal, Haryana on July 1, 1961. Her academic career was brilliant despite many struggles. JRD Tata, an Indian pilot and industrialist was her inspiration. She joined NASA in 1995 and got selected for her first flight in 1998. She was the first Indian born woman to fly in space. She was an American astronaut and represented the United States. She was posthumously bestowed with a number of honours including Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA Space Flight Medal, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Distinguished Service Medal. She had always dreamt of stars and the moon has herself become a star.
