The Indian Football Association is the football governing association in the West Bengal. It was established in 1893 and the IFA Shield tournament was commenced the very same year. It is the oldest football tournament of Kolkata, which was dominated by British army teams in the initial years. Their monopoly was beaten by Mohun Bagan in 1911. It was the first Indian football team that won the IFA Shield defeating East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1. It was a notable moment in the history of Indian football. East Bengal Club bagged the IFA Shield 27 times and the Mohun Bagan won 21 times. |
