In the last couple of five year plans that were made by the government, there was great stress on the improvement of health care in India. This however, according to the critics, has not gone as planned and this is attributed to the failure in integration of health care with wider social and economic development. Also, the lack in nutrition facilities and sanitation etc is also cited as a reason.
The expenditure that the government is making on health care facilities is reducing in comparison of the private sector's investment which has gone up to 1.5 times that of the government. The amounts that are being spent by the government are declining in the five year plans over the years. The Rs.33.9 billion budget in the 1985-89 plan went down and was estimated to be Rs 20 million in the 1994 five year plan. |
