Garba is a popular dance form of Gujarat. It is a circular form of dance performed by women on the Navaratri, Sharad Purnima, Vasant Panchami, Holi and similar other festivals.
The name garba comes from the Sanskrit term ‘Garba Deep’. In this dance form, ladies place the pot with the lamp on their heads and sway in circles. The Garba celebration starts at night time. Women assemble at one place. Traditionally, a photograph of the deity or a lamp is placed centrally and a circle is formed around it followed by dancing around it. The rhythm is maintained by a drummer. Garba songs are usually sung to invoke the blessings of Mother Goddess Amba.
