G D Birla
Shri Ghanshyam Das Birla was a noted businessman of India. He was born on April 10, 1894 and inherited the family business to diversify them in several other areas. He founded several educational institutions and established temples, hospitals and planetariums. He laid the foundation of Birla Estate and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

In 1957, Birla was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India. During his lifetime, he has established several mills and industries. After Indian independence, he invested in tea, textiles, cement, chemicals and steel tubes. He died on June 11, 1983. The G.D. Birla award for Scientific Research has been established in his honour and to encourage scientists.
