|An affinity was seen to develop between India and France as soon as India achieved independence in 1947. These relations developed into a diplomatic relationship soon after and as a result of this, the French colonies in Pondicherry were removed by the French without using any military forces on November 1, 1954.
Also, a major support was provided by France to India when it proved to be the only country that supported India on the decision to go nuclear when it was announced so in 1998. India seeks permanent residency as a member of the United Nations and for this, there has been ample support provided by the former president Chirac and also the current French President Sarkozy. Trade and military partnership has flourished between France and India. The largest supply of nuclear fuel is provided by France and also, military reinforcements like Scorpene class submarines and Airbus etc are purchased to improve the standard of forces of the Indian Republic.
