Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was born on May 13, 1905 at Hauz Qazi area of Old Delhi. He served as the fifth president of India from 1974 to 1977. He was educated at St. Stephen's College and St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and subsequently became an active member of the Congress Party.
He met Jawaharlal Nehru in England in 1925. He joined the Indian National Congress and actively participated in the freedom movement. He was elected to the Assam Assembly in 1935 and became the Minister of Finance, Revenue and Labor in the on September 19, 1938. In 1942 he was arrested in the Quit India movement and sentenced to three-and-a-half years' imprisonment.

After independence he was elected to the Assam Assembly for two consecutive terms, i.e. from 1957-62 and 1962-67. He had earlier been elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1952-53.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was elected to the President ship of the Indian Republic on August 20, 1974, and died in office on 11 February 1977.
