Elephanta Caves
The Elephanta Caves is located 10 km away from the Gateway of India in the vicinity of the large Mumbai metropolis. The rock cut caves dates back to the 5th century. The cave area covers about 60000 square feet and consists of courtyards, a number of subsidiary shrines, a main chamber and two laterals. These rock cut caves are temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and are enriched with sculptural content.
Inside the caves Lord Shiva is portrayed in the Shivalingam form and in 8 manifest forms. The temple consist six pillars at the entrance that leads to a hall that is decorated with sculptures depicting the legends from the Shiva Purana.
