Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament in India and is the 3rd oldest football tournament in the whole world, apart from the English FA-Cup and the Scottish FA-Cup. The Durand Cup football tournament began in Shimla by then Foreign Secretary of India, Sir Mortimer Durand in 1898. Royal Scot Fusiliers brought the honours in the opening Durand cup by beating Highland Light Infantry. Since the time of Independence, East Bengal (15), Mohun Bagan (16) has bagged victories. The tournament took place at the Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi and was hosted by the army. It used to attract huge crowds, but nowadays it has lost its luster because of the lack of coordination between the All India Football Federation and the Army. |
