Deepa Mehta

Deepa Mehta was born on 1 January 1950 in Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab. She is a Canadian film screenwriter and director. She migrated to Canada in 1973. She started her film career as a screenwriter for children’s film and in 1991 she made her first directorial debut with the film ‘Sam and Me’. She was the director of the film ‘Fire’ and ‘Water’.
Mehta is best known for her Elements Trilogy. She is at present working on a film entitled Exclusion. The plot of the film is based on the Komagata Maru, an incident that took place in Canada.
