| Deepa Mehta was born on 1 January 1950 in Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab. She is a Canadian film screenwriter and director. She migrated to Canada in 1973. She started her film career as a screenwriter for children’s film and in 1991 she made her first directorial debut with the film ‘Sam and Me’. She was the director of the film ‘Fire’ and ‘Water’. |

| Mehta is best known for her Elements Trilogy. She is at present working on a film entitled Exclusion. The plot of the film is based on the Komagata Maru, an incident that took place in Canada. |
