Chikankari

Chikankari is a famous craft of Uttar Pradesh, state of northern India. This craft is a very fine embroidery work which was initially done on the fabric muslin but these days, georgette and chiffon and other fine fabrics can be found with the chikankari embroidery work done.
The word chikan has been taken from the Persian word Chakeen which means making delicate patterns on the fabric. Traditionally chikankari is done with a white thread on fabric muslin, which is commonly known as mulmul. It is believed that this craft was introduced by Noorjahan, the queen of Mughal emperor Jahangir. She is said to be an expert in embroidery especially Turkish style.
