Cave Paintings in India had their origin in prehistoric times. The cave paintings have helped us a lot in knowing our ancestors in a better way. The finest examples of these paintings comprise of the murals of Ajanta, Ellora, Bagh, Sittanavasal, etc, which reflect an emphasis on naturalism. The oldest cave paintings in India are about 20,000 years old. These paintings are a mixture of people and animals.
The digging of the Ajanta caves was initiated in the 4th century AD. Over the centuries, 29 such caves were dug by the Buddhist monks. These caves are adorned with sculptures of animals, guards and deities, and paintings of courtly life and Buddhist tales.

The caves of Ellora are replete with carvings inspired by Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. These caves date back to the 7th century AD. The wall paintings of the Bagh caves date back to period between 5th and 7th century.
