Bankim Chandra Chattarjee
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on June 26, 1838 and belonged to an orthodox Bengali family. He was the Deputy Magistrate and Collector till 1891. He began his literary career as a writer of verse. Later, he turned to fiction. ‘Rajmohan’s Wife’ was his first fiction that appeared in print. In 1865, his first Bengali romance, Durgeshnandini was published.
Later in 1872, Chatterjee brought out monthly Bangadarshan to stimulate the intellect of the Bengali speaking people. The magazine included stories, humorous sketches, historical and miscellaneous essays, informative articles, religious discourses, literary criticisms and reviews. The novel that got full recognition as historical fiction is ‘Rajsimha’. His noted novels were translated in almost all the major languages of India. On April 8, 1894, he passed away.
