|Balbir Singh Sr was born on October 10, 1924. He was considered to be one of best centre-forwards of India. Balbir was blessed with the mysterious ability to score goals at will. He was a proud member of the Indian hockey teams in 1948, 1952 and 1956, where India bagged gold at Olympics. There are a large number of achievements to his credit. After retirement, he enjoyed a victorious stint as Indian team manager that led the team to a silver medal in World Cup of 1971 and gold in World Cup 1975. He was the first hockey player who was bestowed with the Padma Shri in 1957.
