Bahadur Shah Zafar

Bahadur Shah Jafar was the last Mughal Emperor in India. He was born on October 24, 1775.  He was the son of Akbar Shah II and on 28 September, 1838, he became the emperor upon his father’s death.  Zafar was one of the greatest Urdu poets in India and wrote a large number of Urdu Gazals.

In 1858, Jafar was exiled to Rangoon, Burma along with his wife and other family members. A formal end was declared to the Mughal Dynasty that began with Babur in 1526. On November 7, 1862, he died in exile. Jafar is respected in the modern India as the first nationalists who actively opposed British rule in Indian soil.
