Annie Besant

Annie Besant was a great woman, a warrior, patriot and a priestess.  She was born in London on 1st October 1947. She was the first women to support birth control in England. On 16 November 1893, she first visited India and adopted Hinduism as her new faith.

Annie got actively involved in the educational and political activities and set up number of schools and colleges. The most important college that was set up by her was the Central Hindu College High School at Banaras in 1913. She started a journal called ‘New India’ as she believed that India can attain freedom only if political pressures are put on Parliament.

In 1916, she founded the Home Rule League and in 1917 she was elected President of the Indian National Congress. She died on 20 September, 1933.
